What is a thermal runaway and what measures can you take to prevent a battery fire?

Thermal runaway is a phenomenon you often read about with lithium-ion batteries. But what does this mean?

We’re increasingly using lithium-ion batteries for tools and electric vehicles such as delivery bikes and e-choppers. These batteries are powerful and long-lasting, but they also come with risks. A damaged battery can overheat while charging and even catch fire. This phenomenon is known as thermal runaway. In this blog, we explain how a thermal runaway occurs and what measures you can take to prevent a battery fire.

How does a thermal runaway occur?

Thermal runaway is a chemical chain reaction that starts inside a lithium-ion battery. This makes the battery extremely hot and leads to an uncontrollable fire, with the battery even exploding! This chain reaction is called a thermal runaway.

How do you recognise a damaged battery?

Recognising a damaged battery is difficult, especially because the damage is often not visible on the outside. What can you do about the consequences of a thermal runaway?

The most important thing is that you always charge lithium-ion batteries in a safe environment such as a battery safe. If your battery experiences a thermal runaway, the fire and any potential explosion will be contained within the safe. This way, you protect not only your property but also your staff and yourself from the dangerous consequences of a battery fire.

Choose a safe battery safe

A battery safe is essential to protect yourself, your surroundings, and your property from the dangers of a battery fire or explosion. A safe battery safe must not only withstand a battery fire but also the pressure of a potential explosion caused by a thermal runaway.
