E-bikeaccu.nl is a Dutch web shop that sells batteries and chargers for e-bikes. Most of the batteries are new and they supply them from stock. Customers are sometimes also allowed to return purchased batteries. These returned batteries are stored in a special battery safe.
Initially, they were hesitant to purchase a battery safe, but on their insurer’s advice, they decided to go ahead. Fortunately, because recently a battery in the safe caught fire. The fire remained contained within the safe and did not spread, so their premises remained undamaged and the stock intact. This is the story of e-bikeaccu.nl!
Insurers reluctant to insure premises
When e-bikeaccu.nl took over the storage at their current location, it was challenging to find a party willing to insure their premises. Many insurers had little knowledge about lithium-ion batteries and were not even willing to discuss it due to the large number of batteries in the warehouse.
“Eventually, I ended up with the insurer Nationale-Nederlanden,” says owner Tom van Schijndel. “It was really enlightening to find an insurer that had delved into it. They explained that at least used batteries had to be stored in a fireproof cabinet.”
Following this advice, e-bikeaccu.nl decided to purchase a Batteryguard battery safe. And just as well, because a year later, one of the batteries in the safe caught fire.
A happy ending and back to work immediately
Employee Bart van Linschoten was called out of bed that morning and rushed to the premises. “There was such thick smoke, I immediately called the emergency services,” he later told Batteryguard in an interview.
The fire service arrived, carried the battery safe with burning batteries outside, and dunked the batteries in a water barrel. Thankfully, the fire remained inside the safe and did not spread to the premises. The relief was immense, and the next day the staff could return to work.
